In-person PNB meetings (so 2004-2015)

. . . in-person PNB meetings, those were the days . . . Some may think that directors getting together for three days, maybe four, would be a power for good, reducing fractiousness & misunderstandings, developing generosity of spirit & the making of allowances, a Pacifican incarnation of Saint Greta – others may think it would only provide opportunity, to go with motive & means, creating work for the local PD . . .

. . . PacificaWorld . . .

. . . so it goes . . .

Nevertheless, rather than a bouquet of barbed wire:

Thanking Chair[:] Executive Director Dan Coughlin and others present Marty Durlin, Chair of the PNB, with flowers (daisies and roses), and thanks her for her service.

The cost? Sometimes said to be $54k (re midtown Manhattan, 2005), other times $80k (re 2008):

From Director D. Warren, Who paid for the NY PNB and how much did it cost? Answer: Central services & WBAI paid; the amount was $54K.

Chief Financial Officer Lonnie Hicks, 18June2005 PNB minutes, unpag.; p. 2 of the PDF – https://kpftx.org/archives/pnb/pnb050618/pnb050618_68_minutes.pdf (re the F1-Su3Apr2005 PNB, Hilton Metropolitan, Lexington Ave)

and

we could save immediately approximately $80k if we eliminated the summer meeting in lieu of a phone conference

PNB Finance Cttee Chair Mike Martin (KPFT), 20Mar2008 PNB, 56:47 – https://kpftx.org/archives/pnb/pnb080320/pnb080320a.mp3 (the discussion continues as the ‘b’-file; a $75k estimate was made at the 18Mar2008 PNB Finance Cttee, 0:01, meeting a nod of approval from CFO Hicks – https://kpftx.org/archives/pnb/finance/080318/finance080318b.mp3)

$55k? $80k?

$500 return flight + ($300 hotel room x 3, Th-F-Sa) + (3 sets of $50 meals) = $1 550 …

(22 − 4 directors) + 4 LSB Chairpersons + (ED + CFO + 3 National underlings + corporate lawyer) = 28 …

$1550 x 28 = $43 400 …

+ ($1k room hire x 3) + sundries ≃ $47k

And $80k? In 2008? $2k x 40? A bigger entourage than Al Sharpton.

(Deserved digression: Mike Martin is a trial lawyer with a well-earnt national reputation in helping workers suffering silicosis, notably in proving respirator product liability. His work website proudly says, under “Public Service and Recognition”, “2005-2009 – National Board Member — Pacifica Foundation” – https://www.martinwaltonlaw.com/attorneys.html. Mr Martin tried his best to get Pacifica to see sense, to cope with money.)

34 meetings, 2004-2015; the series starts in a notable way: it’s the “[f]irst meeting of the ELECTED Pacifica National Board[,] Berkeley, CA, March 13 and 14, 2004[.] There is no more interim Pacifica National Board!” (original Trump-caps) – https://kpftx.org/archives/pnb/pnb040313/pnb040313_1923_minutes.pdf (unpag., but p. 1 of the PDF; also, not minutes but an anonymous detailed (& jocular) contemporaneous report – author is Hugh, who seems to have posted it here, http://www.ominous-valve.com/pac/040314pnb.html (currently a broken URL), with the Trump-cap clause as the sub-title to the original title, ‘The iPNB is dead, long live the PNB!’; the kpftx.org editor removed it for an unknown reason, without informing the reader; Hugh’s URL per http://www.wbai.net/pnb/pnb_mtg_rpt_berkeley3-14-04.html).

So the new by-laws, hard fought, finally got their new governance. Hurrah! A new day Pacifica. Hurray! . . . Can i have an amen? “Point of point, madam Chair!”, exclaims Director Delegate Citizen Comrade Friend. “I challenge the ruling of the Chair!”.
